Planning Your First Disneyland Vacation?
Not sure where to start? You're in the right place!
Dreaming of visiting Disneyland in California but not sure where to begin?
Between choosing travel dates, finding the right hotel, understanding theme park tickets, and figuring out how to make the most of your time, there's a lot to consider!
And while Disneyland has just two theme parks, planning a Disneyland vacation can be surprisingly different from planning a Walt Disney World vacation.
The good news? You don't have to become a Disneyland expert before booking your vacation. That's what I'm here for!
Hi, I'm Jen! I'm a Disney-focused travel advisor who has helped over 1,000 families plan their vacations since 2021.
I've personally stayed at every Disneyland Resort hotel and multiple nearby Good Neighbor Hotels. I regularly visit the parks and have experienced everything from character dining and nighttime entertainment to specialty tours and Lightning Lane services firsthand.
Before requesting your personalized Disneyland vacation quote, here are five things I recommend considering!
1. Decide When You'd Like to Visit
One of the most common questions I hear is, "When is the best time to visit Disneyland?"
The answer depends on what matters most to your family!
There's no guaranteed time of year with perfect weather, low crowds, and the lowest prices. Every season has trade-offs.
A few important things to consider:
School schedules and holidays: Christmas, spring break, and other popular vacation periods often have higher demand and prices.
Budget-friendly travel dates: Traveling during certain weekdays or outside major holidays may offer better pricing, particularly for hotel accommodations.
Seasonal celebrations: Disneyland offers special experiences throughout the year, including Halloween Time, Holidays at the Disneyland Resort, Lunar New Year, and the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival.
Entertainment schedules: Fireworks, parades, and other nighttime entertainment aren't necessarily offered every night. Schedules can vary by season and day of the week.
Something First-Time Visitors Often Don't Realize:
Unlike Walt Disney World, Disneyland serves a large local audience, and entertainment schedules can vary significantly throughout the year.
For example, fireworks may be scheduled primarily on select nights during certain seasons, and even scheduled fireworks can be canceled due to weather conditions, particularly wind.
Special ticketed events may also affect regular park operating hours.
If seeing a particular nighttime show or experiencing a seasonal festival is important to your family, it's worth considering that before choosing your dates.
Start by identifying one or two possible travel windows rather than searching for the perfect week. If your dates are flexible, you may find better pricing, but be prepared for possible trade-offs in entertainment, weather, and seasonal offerings.
2. Think About How Many Park Days You'd Like
The Disneyland Resort has two theme parks:
Disneyland Park: Home to Sleeping Beauty Castle, classic Disney attractions, Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, and more.
Disney California Adventure Park: Home to Cars Land, Avengers Campus, Pixar Pier, and other popular experiences.
While the two parks are directly across from one another, there's plenty to see and do in both!
Before requesting your quote, consider how many days you'd like to spend enjoying the parks and whether you'd prefer a more relaxed vacation or a shorter trip packed with attractions.
How Many Days Do I Recommend at Disneyland?
One of the biggest misconceptions about Disneyland is that because there are only two theme parks, you can experience everything in just one or two days!
Did you know Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure have more than 50 rides combined?
And that's before considering shows, parades, character experiences, dining, seasonal celebrations, and nighttime entertainment!
Having visited Disneyland many times, my personal recommendation is at least THREE full theme park days for first-time visitors who want to experience as much as possible!
Here's what to consider:
1 Day: Best for visitors with limited time who want to experience a few must-do attractions. You'll need to prioritize carefully!
2 Days: Enough to enjoy many highlights of both parks, but you'll likely miss some experiences, particularly if you want to include entertainment and dining.
3 Days: My recommended starting point! More time for attractions, entertainment, character experiences, and revisiting favorites without feeling quite as rushed.
4–5 Days: Ideal for a more relaxed vacation, specialty dining, guided tours, seasonal events, resort activities, and additional opportunities to enjoy nighttime entertainment.
One more thing to consider: Some nighttime entertainment is only scheduled on select dates, and weather can cause cancellations. Having multiple opportunities to see your must-do shows can make a big difference!
You don't need to plan every park day before requesting a quote. Start by thinking about how much time you'd like to spend in the parks and what kind of vacation experience you're hoping for. I'll help you navigate the ticket options and planning details once you're ready to book!
Important Booking Note: Disneyland vacation packages require a minimum of 2 days of theme park tickets, along with your hotel accommodations. While 1-day Disneyland tickets can be purchased separately, I specialize in complete vacation packages that include both your hotel stay and theme park admission. For first-time visitors hoping to experience as much as possible, I personally recommend at least 3 full theme park days!
What About Park Hopper and Lightning Lane?
These are two important ticket options that can make a big difference in your experience!
Park Hopper Tickets: Allow you to visit both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure on the same day, subject to park availability and applicable hopping hours. Since the park entrances are so close together Park Hopper can offer tremendous flexibility!
Lightning Lane Multi Pass: Allows you to use Lightning Lane entrances at select attractions, helping you spend less time waiting in standby lines.
Unlike Walt Disney World's advance attraction-selection system, Disneyland guests begin making Lightning Lane Multi Pass attraction selections after entering a theme park.
You can purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass in advance as an add-on with your tickets, often at a lower price than purchasing on the day of your visit. However, when adding it to a multi-day ticket in advance, it applies to every day of that ticket. If you only want it for certain days, you can consider purchasing it on those individual park days, subject to availability and current pricing.
You don't need to know which ticket options are right for your family before working with me! I'll help you understand the available options and how they fit your vacation plans. The best part about Disneyland packages is we can make revisions if you change your mind on these adds on before your trip
Disneyland also requires valid theme park admission and a theme park reservation for each day of your visit. I'll provide guidance on this process when you book.
3. Your Hotel Choice Matters
There are Disneyland Resort hotels, Disney-designated Good Neighbor Hotels, and numerous independently operated hotels throughout Anaheim.
With so many options, it's tempting to simply choose the least expensive hotel you find online.
But the cheapest hotel isn't always the best value for your vacation!
This is one of the biggest differences between planning a Disneyland vacation and a Walt Disney World vacation if you have been to Walt Disney World but not Disneyland
Walking Distance Isn't Always What It Seems
A hotel may appear incredibly close to Disneyland on a map, but that doesn't necessarily mean it offers a convenient walk to the actual park entrances. The walking route, intersections, security entrances, and hotel location all matter. And after spending an entire day walking around the parks, an additional 20-minute walk back to your hotel can feel much longer than it did in the morning!
Some hotels offer complimentary shuttles, while others use paid transportation services. These may operate on specific schedules and require additional travel or waiting time.
Look Beyond the Cost
Before choosing a hotel, it's important to consider:
Actual walking distance to the park entrances
Hotel cleanliness, condition, and guest reviews
Transportation options and shuttle schedules
Parking fees and other additional charges
Room size, sleeping arrangements, and amenities
Your family's comfort and convenience
A hotel offering complimentary parking or breakfast might seem like the best deal, but those savings may not outweigh a less convenient location or other disadvantages. Limiting to hotels that only offer free breakfast can also result in paying hundreds more for a “free” breakfast than a hotel that doesn’t offer one
I've personally stayed at every Disneyland Resort hotel and multiple Disney Good Neighbor Hotels to experience the accommodations, locations, and walks firsthand. When recommending accommodations, I consider much more than the price displayed on a booking website. My goal is to help you find a hotel that makes sense for your budget AND the vacation experience you're hoping to have.
4. Establish Your Vacation Budget
Before requesting your personalized Disneyland vacation quote, it's helpful to have a realistic budget in mind.
Your total vacation expenses may include:
Hotel accommodations
Disneyland theme park tickets
Airfare or driving expenses
Airport transportation, parking, or rental cars
Meals, snacks, and drinks
Optional experiences, tours, and additional purchases
If you're flying, I recommend researching airfare for your potential travel dates before finalizing your vacation window. Additionally the closest or cheapest flight isn't always the best transportation choice. Airport transfer time and costs can affect the total value of a flight.
Remember to compare the total cost of your vacation, not just the hotel nightly rate or the advertised price of discounted theme park tickets! A less expensive hotel may come with additional transportation costs, while a slightly more expensive hotel within comfortable walking distance could be worth the difference.
How Booking, Deposits & Payments Work
Disneyland vacation packages can be secured with just a $200 deposit per reservation, rather than paying for your entire vacation upfront.
And there's another important benefit: Disney vacation packages generally offer more flexibility than purchasing nonrefundable theme park tickets separately!
Here's how standard Disneyland vacation packages typically work:
$200 Deposit: Onsite and Good Neighbor hotel and theme park ticket packages can be secured with a $200 deposit per reservation, not per person.
Flexible Payments: You can make additional payments toward your vacation before the final payment deadline if you’d like however nothing is required
Final Payment: Your remaining balance is due 30 days before check-in.
Refundable Packages: Reservations canceled at least 30 days before arrival are refundable, including the theme park ticket component, subject to applicable exceptions such as special event tickets.
Flexible Changes: Need to adjust your dates, hotel, or other package details? Changes are generally permitted at least 3 days before arrival, subject to availability and current pricing.
Travel protection and certain third-party hotel or supplier charges may be nonrefundable. The applicable terms will be reviewed before booking.
5.Why Where You Book Matters
There are many websites selling Disneyland hotels and discounted theme park tickets, but not every booking offers the same flexibility!
Individually purchased Disneyland theme park tickets are generally nonrefundable, even when your vacation plans change. Tickets also have expiration dates, and promotional tickets may have additional restrictions.
Some third-party sellers offer legitimate savings and their own refund or exchange policies, but it's important to understand those terms before purchasing.
With an eligible Walt Disney Travel Company vacation package, your hotel accommodations and theme park tickets are booked together with the benefit of Disney's flexible package cancellation and modification policies.
That flexibility can be especially valuable when planning far in advance!
And when you book through Trips by Jen, you'll also receive my complimentary personalized planning services and exclusive client resources.
Before purchasing discounted tickets or reserving a hotel independently, consider whether the potential savings are worth any differences in cancellation flexibility, convenience, and planning assistance.
